So, let’s dive in and explore the exciting world of transitioning from a traditional 9-5 to entrepreneurship!
Starting with Candice Robinson, the owner of C. Robinson Consults, who I recently snagged an interview with and very eager to share.
When did you leave your traditional 9-5?
June 15th, 2020
How did you know you were ready to fully transition?
I didn’t and still don’t think I am, lol, COVID kind of forced me into this lifestyle and it has been an interesting experience. Sometimes I rethink my decision, but I also realize I love my flexibility.
When did you launch C. Robinson Consults?
June 15th, 2020, the same day I decided to transition from a traditional 9-5 work environment.
How would you describe the work you do/services you provide?
I am an organizational consultant with a focus on inclusion, diversity, equity, and antiracism. I conduct assessments and develop strategies for organizations to move along the spectrum.
How did you build up your client base?
I am blessed to have a great network from my previous job. From their partnership, I have gained the majority of my clients.
What sparked your passion for consulting?
I loved the idea of assisting various organizations and working across industries. I feel like I learn so much about how the world works.
Did you have any fears? If so, how did you manage them?
I have a fear of failing all the time. Because I am a solopreneur and I do not have a job, every day I do not work I do not get paid and that’s scary. I spend alot of time praying over my business and talking to other entrepreneurs about what they are doing or have done.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed?
Pray, talk to friends and family, exercise, and eat some great food lol.
What keeps you going?
The need for my work, my friends, family, and every child in my life.
What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?
The flexibility! I am able to be there for my family and friends in a way I never have been able to be. It has been amazing for my mental health because there are times when getting up early is too much but I can work late in the evening when I catch my second wind. It also allows my clients to utilize my services in ways that if I were working a traditional 9-5 would be tricky. Need me to be on a 7 pm board meeting? Sure. Want to do a focus group, but have staff that works in India, so I can work that out.
What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
Receiving an email from a client months after our engagement was over and hearing about all the great progress that has been made.
What activities do you recommend entrepreneurs invest their time in?
Exercise and any other wellness practices.
What’s your top tip for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Set your boundaries! Remember these are your customers/clients, but not your friends.
Transitioning from a traditional 9 – 5, is not an easy path, but for those who are willing to take the leap, the rewards can be immense. Whether you’re considering starting your own business or simply curious about the world of entrepreneurship, I hope this post has provided you with valuable insights and inspiration to pursue your entrepreneurial dreams.
Remember, the journey may be tough, but with dedication, hard work, and a willingness to learn, you can create a successful business and achieve the freedom and flexibility you’ve been dreaming of.
